After 2016 and 2024, where both female candidates at the top of the ticket didn't seal the deal, some folks in the party seem ready to revert to what they see as the "default" setting, regardless of the changing demographics of the country and their own party's base.

• You got your big-dollar donors – the folks cutting the biggest checks who, according to Crockett, are signaling their preference.

• Then you got the potential candidates themselves: names like California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, and even former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg getting tossed around as "safe" options.

The pattern is clearer than a sunny day: When the going gets tough, the political establishment often defaults to what they think is the least risky option, which historically means candidates who fit a certain mold.

This strategy often ignores the energy, turnout potential, and unique ability of candidates from marginalized communities to mobilize voters who are otherwise disengaged.

It's the same fear that makes them hesitant to go all-in on bold policies that actually address systemic inequality. They chase the mythical "swing voter" in the suburbs while taking the loyalty of Black voters for granted.

Today, we bring you the front line from Columbus, Ohio, where one Black family—with receipts, resources, and rent in hand—has been pushed toward court not because they couldn’t pay, but because the landlord wanted public assistance to do the collecting.

You read that right: they filed eviction to trigger nonprofit help—then blocked every other path forward.

In a city that says “Housing for All,” Beacon showed us who housing is really for—and who the law leaves behind.

Ohio’s landlord-tenant laws ain’t neutral. They’re engineered. Under Ohio Revised Code 5321, a landlord can serve a 3-day eviction notice, skip mediation, skip repairs, and lock your account—legally. Meanwhile, Franklin County stacked over 25,000 eviction filings last year alone.

• Beacon Property Management: Filed eviction to make the family eligible for emergency aid they didn’t qualify for.
